A paradox that Despo Sophocleous has been continuously exploring in her\u00a0work, researching the memory of places and time and striving to convey these ideas in\u00a0her production. She has recently produced a series of pendants made of wood and\u00a0cotton strings, thought in such a way that they have to be adjusted to the body,becoming alive by being worn and producing sounds and movement. Each\u00a0piece is carefully designed before being bound\u00a0together with invisible joints, creating a mobile\u00a0wooden necklace on which she voluntarily leaves\u00a0hand-written annotations to remind us of the marks\u00a0we leave behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Acting as a mapmaker, she highlights specific places\u00a0that we are led to imagine and that we believe we\u00a0imagine. What she is showing us is that our\u00a0memories, sometimes true and accurate, can also be\u00a0easily distorted. Following her call on jewellery\u00a0Design, she undertook a BFA in Jewellery and Metalsmithing at the Nova Scotia College\u00a0of Art and Design University in Halifax in 2004. She then benefitted from an exchange\u00a0program at the Pforzheim University Faculty of Design in 2006. From 2008 to 2015, she\u00a0remained in Germany to continue her researches and experiments at the Munich\u00a0Academy of Fine Arts with Otto K\u00fcnzli as a mentor and teacher.<\/p>\n<p>Trough the years, Despo\u2019s works has been rewarded with many awards including the\u00a0prestigious Herbert Hofmann Award in Munich in 2012 during Schmuck, the most\u00a0important international event in the field of contemporary jewellery. She has been\u00a0selected to participate again as part of the 2018 edition. A few years back, in 2008,\u00a0the quality of her technique was highlighted by the Lieutenant Governor\u2019s Award, Nova\u00a0Scotia Talent Trust which is given to promising young artists. Despo Sophocleous is also\u00a0the recipient of a considerable number of scholarships, including the Deutscher\u00a0Akademischer Austausch Dienst Graduate Scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>Her creations have been showcased in numerous public and private institutions. Thus\u00a0she has taken part in more than forty solo and group exhibitions in Europe, Asia and\u00a0North America. Munich\u2019s Museum of Modern Art, Pinakothek der Moderne as well as\u00a0the CODA Museum in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, have acquired several of her pieces.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014 she took part in the exhibition \u00ab Remarkable Contemporary Jewellery \u00bb\u00a0presented at Montreal Museum of Fine Arts\u2019s Design Lab, an exhibition curated by Diane\u00a0Charbonneau, from the Museum\u2019s Decorative Arts and Noel Guyomarc\u2019h. In 2015, the\u00a0Marzee Gallery in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, hosts her first solo exhibition. In 2016,\u00a0art historian and curator Ellen Maurer-Zilioli invited Despo with 35 other artists to \u00abPrivate Confessions \u00bb, an exhibition gathering sketches, drawings and installations.\u00a0After being held at the CODA Museum, the second edition took place in 2017 at the\u00a0Villa Stuck Museum in Munich.<\/p>\n<p>Galerie Noel Guyomarc\u2019h is particularly proud and pleased to exclusively display\u00a0Despo\u2019s new series of pieces before they depart for Seoul for another exhibition,\u00a0alongside the work of a dozen other Canadian
