Jorge Manilla is based according to George Bataille’s concept off reflection which centers around the idea of transgression and the sacred, challenging traditional notions of self and experience.
As his theory Manilla’s work argues that true experience, particularly in a godless universe, is found not in the rational and controlled, but in moments of excess, loss, and the breakdown of boundaries between self and other.
Through materials patinas and paint Manilla wants to confront the taboo ad embracing the disruptive forces that lie beyond established norms.
Jorge Manilla is an artist born in Mexico City, lives and works between Oslo, Norway, and Ghent, Belgium. After his master’s degree in 2006 at St Lucas University of Art and Design in Antwerp, Belgium, he obtains his PhD and the position as Head of Professor in the subject area Metal and art jewelry at the Oslo National Academy of the arts, Norway in 2017. Manilla is constantly active as a visiting professor as a critic and tutor of art programs. His work has been acquired by various museums.
